In this important paper, Onno Van der Hart and colleagues underline the role of dissociation in complex posttraumatic stress disorders. Insufficiently recognized among these troubles, dissociation is nevertheless a key concept initially elaborated by French psychologist Pierre Janet (1859 – 1947) in Paris. This article explains the nature of dissociation according to Janet and why it is still most relevant for current clinical research and treatment.
